The Village Square and its lanes
At the heart of Megève, the village square has kept its seventeenth-century bulb bell tower, that of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church, along with its Savoyard look. Around it, the cobbled pedestrian lanes of Rue Saint-François and Rue Charles-Feige line up old chalets, boutiques and sweet shops. A horse-carriage ride, as the lights come on under the fir trees, makes a winter date that is hard to forget, even without falling into cliché.
Mont d’Arbois and Rochebrune
From Rochebrune and Mont d’Arbois, the two massifs that overlook the village, the ski runs offer fine descents and an endless view towards Mont Blanc. In summer, the trails invite you to hike and picnic in high pastures, among Tarine heifers and mountain chalets. A lunch at a refuge of the Rothschild family, around a tartiflette, extends the day into a leisurely, hearty conversation.
Calvary and Palais ice rink
Built in the nineteenth century at the request of priest Ambroise Martin, the Megève Calvary is a small sanctuary of fourteen oratories on a wooded hill, perfect for a peaceful, cultural walk. Coming back down, the modernised sports palace houses an ice rink open all year round. On Lyad, Megève members share their quiet addresses; it is up to you to find someone to lace up skates with next weekend.
